I'm going to start this story by telling you the ending first. Well, there really isn't and ending, so I'm just going to tell you where the story is as of today.

Dede Hoffman, a professional business writer in St. Louis, MO, has her website, Wordscapesllc.com in the #1 position for the term, "Saint Louis Business Writer" and "Saint Louis Copywriter" in the Google Search Engine Results Page (SERP).

There are over 455,000 web pages competing for the first term, and 100,000 web pages competing for the second. And, she reached the #1 position for both terms by writing and publishing only 5 articles.

Now, let's go back to the beginning of the story.
Last summer I had an opportunity to meet Dede Hoffman at an Internet Marketing workshop that I was teaching in St. Louis. She is an exceptional marketing writer who attended the workshop to learn how to use her writing skill to generate business from the Internet.

It's important to note that I'm always on the lookout for joint venture partners, and I think Dede is too. I look for people who need a service I can provide, who in return, can provide a service I need. In this case, Dede was a perfect match. I needed a writer, and Dede wanted to get her website to the top of the search engines.

This was our agreement
After the workshop, I approached Dede and suggested my joint venture proposal. If she would agree to write five articles, I would use my Internet Marketing skills to get both of our sites to the top of the SERP's for our keyword phrases, and teach her everything I knew about article marketing in the process. The phrase I wanted RecognizedExpert.com to place for was "Article Marketing Forum" and Dede wanted her website, Wordscapesllc.com, to place high for the term, "Saint Louis Business Writer." She agreed, and wrote five wonderful articles.

Results
Before uploading the articles to the Internet for distribution, I wrote the titles, description and author block using every Internet Marketing skill I possessed.

In just a few weeks, Dede's website made it to the #1 position for the term, "Saint Louis Business Writer." She also made it to the #1 position for the term "Saint Louis copywriter." And, RecognizedExpert.com is currently in the #3 position for "Article Marketing Forum" with more than 7,000,000 web pages competing for that valuable spot.

It's also important to note that before we collaborated on this project, neither of our websites showed up in the SERP's for these terms. Nothing.

This is the magic of article marketing. This is the magic of a great joint venture partnership. This is the magic of two people working together to achieve something neither of us could have accomplished on our own.

Great job! You got your client to the top serp for a term with zero competition. You're the best!

Are you kidding? There are 455,000 pages on the web competing for the term "Saint Louis Business Writer" and 7,000,000 for "article marketing forum."

Let me ask you a question, if you were a business writer, marketing writer and a copywriter in Saint Louis, and you were targeting the Saint Louis area for work, what keyword or keyword phrase would you want to place high in the search engines for? And please, tell us how you would take that term with only 5 articles.

For those of you reading this post please keep in mind that taking the term without the Saint Louis prefix is certainly going to be more valuable because there are more searches for the term "Business Writer" than there are, "Saint Louis Business Writer." It is also a much harder term to take the top spot for. Here are the number of competing pages for each term.

For those of you following the Dede Hoffman story, please note that while we are are targeting the phrase "Saint Louis Business Writer" by using that term as the anchor text (clickable text) in the article author block, we are also automatically targeting the broader phrase, "business writer" because it is included in the anchor text.

While Dede is on her way to taking the more lucrative (and more difficult to reach) phrase, "business writer," she has taken the phrase, "Saint Louis Business Writer" on the way.

It would have been foolish for Dede to try to take "business writer" without taking advantage of her local market at the same time. This is where thinking ahead pays off!

The other thing our guest commenter does not understand is the value of being at the top of the search engine results page for the phrase, "Saint Louis Business Writer."

Let's assume that no one will ever search for the term "Saint Louis Business Writer" on their own. That's not the case of course, but let's assume this to be true for this example. The only way they will ever see the results page for the term "Saint Louis Business Writer" is if Dede sends them there for a reference from Google. Did you catch that ... A REFERENCE FROM GOOGLE!

Did you know that 75% of the people who use Google to find what they're looking for perceive the company in the top position to be the expert in their field? Three out of every four people that Dede refers to the Google (SERP) for the term "Saint Louis Business Writer" will see her as the best business writer in Saint Louis. "If Google did not think so, it would not have placed her website at the top of the search engines results page!" ... at least that is what the majority of people think.

The really cool thing is this, if Dede keeps up her SEO effort, her website will soon be at the top of the search engine results page for the term "Business Writer" and she will be perceived as the best business writer in the world. I'm sorry, that isn't true. Only 75% the population will see her as the best business writer in the world.

So let me ask, if you were one of the thousands of business owners in Saint Louis looking for a marketing writer, business writer or copywriter, would you think more of Dede's ability or less of her ability if you found her website, www.Wordscapesllc.com at the top of the Google search engine? Truth is, it really doesn't matter what you or I think. What does matter is that 75 out of every 100 people will see her as the authority in the field of business writing.

Oddly enough, most untapped niches don't have heavy competition...

This doesn't mean there are not customers and valuable analytic data to be gathered.

I have had several low (no) competition local technical terms turn into awesome long-term clients. These terms may not even get 30 hits per month! Other terms may see tens of thousands of hits and will turn into nothing but wasted bandwidth.

Taking what you learn from Google Webmasters Tools and site tracking data for the term "Saint Louis Business Writer" will be incredibly valuable for sure.

I have about a half a dozen "zero competition" word phrases sending clients to me on a regular basis. They don't show up in any of the keywords tools I have used at least.

Bah, Humbug to Unregistered and Kudos to Bob and Dede! The rankings you've achieved do exactly what you intended and in an amazingly short period of time. The idea is to attract the right audience, and by "dialing in" to keyword phrases that accurately reflect Dede Hoffman's offerings to me as a potential client, you've created value for me as a searcher and for Dede as a business owner. The fact that this also gives her a foothold from which to go after the broader term "business writer" is icing on the cake...
