Default Keywords & URLs

Hi there,

Hope everyone had a great holiday weekend and looking forward to the next one!

Here's a question that has come up a few times in various trainings and seems like a good topic for the expert panel.

If you have a url set up (but it's general and not really a keyword), is it best to set up another url that is a highly searched keyword (i.e.howtogetwhateverquick.com)?

If so, would you forward it to the already established URL or keep it separate?

If not, would you just use the keywords in your anchor text?

Thanks so much!
Kass

Hi Kass:
Here's what I would do.
It is much, much better to have your keyword in your URL. The search engines are more likely to show it at the top of the SERP's when someone types in that URL. That being said, here's what I would do.

First, go to Majestic SEO and see how many backlinks your site has. If it's a lot (Recognized Expert has about 20,000 backlinks - that's a lot) I would keep my old domain name and not worry about getting another keyword rich domain name to compete with my powerful site. I might get that domain for another reason, but I would not compete with a successful site.

If I didn't have many back links, (less than 100 links from PR 1 sites) I would get a more powerful domain name and redirect what links I had to my old domain name to my new site.

Thanks so much Bob and congratulations on your 20,000 backlinks. That's incredible! I thought 5,000 was a lot.

I also understand that it's the strength (rating) of the backlinks that makes a difference and I think Market Samurai is an excellent tool for that as well as a few others.

Take care,
Kass

Hi Kass:

You're right. It's much better to have 10 powerful links than 1,000 fair links. Both matter, but quality is better than quantity.

Hi Bob,

Incidently, what advice could you give to generate better quality backlinks? I know, you'll have to think WAY back when you started out! I'm doing quite a lot of SEO but the backlinks thing has just baffeld me so far.
