I'm using a CMS to manage a large site. The Meta Titles are generated dynamically which is good. However, this is not possible for the Description. There is the option to set a global Description. I'm wondering if it is better to have a Description that will appear on thousands of pages, or if it is better to leave the Description blank. It seems that a lot my less important pages are showing up in the supplementary results. I'm wondering if having a duplicate Description is the culprit.

This is a very common issue which occurs with the most of the CMS that Meta Data(Keywords and Description) remains same for all the pages. If a website have similar meta tags on all the pages then this website can be penalized by the search engine due to the use of duplicate content and if you are going to leave them empty then you are mission many things. Because these meta tags are very useful and use by search engine to collect the information about a website and the best part is these tags are not visible on the web browser but these tags only run into the background of the search engine. So talk to your developer that you can write unique meta tags for your all pages into the website.
