I just had an opportunity to befriend Scott Dennison of UnforgetableSpeakers.com on Facebook. He's a professional speaking coach with a dynamite blog that I encourage you to visit.
Scott and I both understand that public speaking is a business ... and the majority of people who speak for a living don't treat it that way. Please take a moment to read his post by the same title and share your thoughts below.

Hi,Friends,
It is Dr.Rich.Still on the topic above I have some tips that will help you all in public speaking Want To Be Rated Higher In Pubic Speaking? Get These Unfailing Secrets Yes I mean what I said. If you really want to be rated higher in your public speaking career you have to get these three unfailing secrets. What are they? · Have An Introductory Opening Speech A good introduction sets the stage. It is meant to grab the attention of your audience. If after five minutes of your message, you fail to grab the attentions of your listeners, for the rest of your message they will not pay attention. Your introduction is where you state the purpose of your message-what you want to accomplish. And your purpose must promise a solution to a particular need in the life of your listeners otherwise you will end up speaking to deaf ears. There are many ways to introduce a speech. It can be put like a story, like a provocative statement, a poem , a hymn etc. All these approaches are meant to grab the interest of your audience throughout your message. · The Body Of Your Message After writing out your introduction the next thing you have to do is to have the body of your message. The body of your message must involve three major dimensions a) The main points developed from your central idea. Your central idea is the main focus of your message. It is also called your title or your topic. (b) The second division is the sub supporting point of your first main point. (c)And then the third division is the sub supporting point. This third point is used to fill out the second main and sub points. The division will go on and on till your last point.· Have A Strong Conclusion-Application Conclusion of a speech plays an important role in every talk just like the introduction.your conclusion is the action part of your message. Without it all you ever said will not be applied. Your conclusion is where you demand an action from your audience. It serves as the summary of all you have said so far to the people. It should not repeat what you said in the body of the message but should bring your speech to a conclusion. You can conclude your speech with a related story, a persuasive statement, a hymn or a recap of your main points. If you follow these points as enumerated you are not only going to be classified as one of the best speakers but will be making a huge amount of money that will fatten your bank account. Hi Bob - I have some sympathy with your point but I'd like to cite two notes of caution.
Firstly, if the idea of public speaking as a business is taken too far, we end up with ugly spamming/pointless posts in blogs such as this full of self-aggrandizement (and for some reason, appearing in bold). This belittles the reader (perhaps the writer also), arguably the profession and certainly your blog. Secondly, many of the best speakers I've seen haven't been professionals. They've been 'amateurs' in the sense that the weren't paid and didn't describe themselves as speakers. They were, simply, people with something fantastic, powerful and important to say. They spoke because they had to, not because it was their profession. This is the kind of speaker I'd rather listen to (and train!) than the speaker who's a speaker because they want to be a speaker... all too often these people are boring and self-promotional to the point of not giving their audience the respect they deserve. Okay, there are fantastic professionals too, but treating it just as a business does no one any favours. Far, far better, in my opinion, to treat it as a vocation. Simon

Good point Simon:
I've always found it funny that people call themselves professional speaker (I fall into that category too.) I guess we do this because we are paid to speak. Back in the days of ancient Greece there were people who where truly professional speakers. They were paid to speak on behalf of others. That is not what professional speaker do today. Many of us fall into the trap of wanting to speak first and finding a topic to speak on later. The best speakers by far are those with a strong message ... who happen to use speaking as a way to get their message across. And if they get paid for talking about their message in public ... more power to them. I would like to see myself as a messenger on my topic first, and a speakers second.

I guess the nearest we have to the Ancient Greek version of 'professional speakers' today are either politicians (God help us!) or anyone representing us in a court of law. You'd be amazed at how many of them I train who are very, very nervous of speaking in public however. I know it shouldn't but it takes me by surprise every time!

Bob,
I think public speaking is about balance. If you go too far in the "business" side and never practice your speaking, then you may get many job offers...but not job "call backs". On the other hand, if you go too far on the "speaking" side you never get a real "business" going and wonder why no one is using a great speaker like you! So if you are going to go into public speaking as a "business" you have to have some balance between the two, where you make sure you are good enough to go out and demand money for what you do...and you know what to do with the money once you get it.And Simon raises an important point: simply because you want to do public speaking does not mean you have to take on all the pressure and work of making it a business! It is possible to do public speaking in a fun, enjoyable way, and take pleasure in helping out others to develop and build their own public speaking skills. For some people it is the element of coaching and building future public speakers that is the real "reward" of public speaking. Two-sided, Tim

Hiya Bob - Did you ever see Gerry Robinson's latest programme (Sir Gerry Robinson presents his new series "Gerry's Big Decision") - if there's a model to follow in business speaking - its his for tough accurate and well balanced.
I've never seen anyone with as much of the common touch than Gerry Robinson did you see - its a magically journey of connecting with people at the base level. Gerry shows why he has such good EI because he's not pandering to people - he's understanding and enabling people and this is the tone that needs to be set for business presentations - we forget humans run businesses not drones in suits.

It was rather fascinating finding a public speaking forum here. Many of speakers have begun marketing themselves on the internet. Who would have thought, a forum on both topics in the same place.
On the business of public speaking.... This is probably the best viewpoint on the subject. Quote:
People confuse celebrity with great speaking. This was actually a correction of another mannerism, firing off the index finger at the audience. With a little training, the handlers trained him to wrap the thumb around the index finger to keep it from killing anyone (or at the least offending). Additionally I believe we are all public speakers. If we speak in public, we are public speakers. Are there any private speakers amongst us here? That being said, mastery of public speaking should be just one of the constant and never ending improvements we make in our lives. The original point, and the one on the blog mentioned there in, if you want more than the applause, then you have to become a businessman first. I found this to be true. As a public speaker and as a self supporting artist. Instead of traveling to sell products by your public speaking, as a businessman you can continually serve the same audience time and again. Is that not what Tony Robbins does? If you want more than just the paycheck, you need to attain speechmastery. Oh yes, one of the things learned from my health care career, if you want to master anything, start teaching it. So, to start teaching public speaking, in addition to occasionally doing classes at the local college, I built http://www.Speechmastery.com Maybe a better way of looking at the original post would be to rephrase the premise too. If you want to be a successful great public speaker you need to not only master the art of public speaking, you need to become a businessman who is knowledgeable and fluent in internet marketing. Speak well and prosper. |

Well said. I think this is the biggest mistake made by people who want to earn a living speaking. They don't realize that speaking is the medium they've chosen to convey their message. If you don't have a message, your public speaking skill doesn't matter.
Aloha, Bob Sommers
