Default Next Level 4 Success

I wanted to share my quick story to help others when it comes to self-help and personal development. I've been to a couple of seminars from really big players throughout my career. What I found, is that 5-10 days after I'm back home, I lose the momentum I felt when I was there. So after 10 years of attending a variety of retreats and seminars, I ran into a friend of mine who loves the Personal Development method. She recommended to me this online program called, "Next Level 4 Success" from Bob Donnell. It's cool that each day I get personally touched by Bob with emails and I get to attend all the events online and in person at one of his centers as a member. He's got famous guest speakers all the time and I love that's it's so affordable and really keeps me on track. I'll never stop going to the big industry events because I LOVE how I feel when I leave, but I've learned that if I don't keep my energy up with a daily program, I find myself leaving the philosophy and power behind.

This philosophy, keeping up what you're doing on a near daily basis, really applies to most things in the practical side of life. If you stopped working your job, you would quickly forget how to do it and would eventually lose the momentum you had while performing daily. Another example is with part time teen hires at large corporate stores. They work so few hours on part time that they never really get a handle on what it is they are doing, despite the training they receive. I recall one job I had a long time ago. We started with 2 weeks of solid sales training which had us all pumped up and ready to go. But we were given maybe 12 hours a week in which to use this. Three 4 hour shifts to practice what the company preached. Needless to say our performance began to slide right out the door.

I've heard it said (and you probably have, too), that it takes 28 days to make or break a habit. Staying motivated and using new techniques is no different than exercising or training yourself to leave your keys in the same place every night. If you can have a system in place for reminders for those 28 days, the practices you desire become habit; natural and integrated into your way of living.

Default 28 Days to Make a Habit

Good point Deborah. I'm in the process of testing this theory out in the month of May with my book on likability. I plan to write something every day for the next 31 days starting on May 1. Thanks again for the tip.

28 days to make/break a habit.... I'd like to cite that in our public courses (where we encourage people to do "homework" and practice after the event) but everything we do/say has to be scientifically validated and referenced, obviously. Can you point me to the origins of the 28 day stuff?

TAI.

I always thought it was 21 days. I suppose it's different for everyone.

My daughter's hypnotherapist suggest it was as low as 18! I'd love to find the evidence behind this - at the moment it sounds like that famous "7% of communication is in the words" thing that everyone mis-quotes/mis-understands... the sort of thing everyone cites but no one understands (and in the latter case is wrong, too, when you read the original research!).

Dr Maxwell Maltz wrote the bestseller Psycho-Cybernetics. Originally a
Plastic Surgeon, Maltz noticed that it took 21 days for amputees to cease feeling phantom sensations in the amputated limb. From further observations he found it took 21 days to create a new habit. Since then the '21 Day Habit Theory' has become an accepted part of self-help programs.

Brain circuits take engrams (memory traces), and produce
neuroconnections and neuropathways only if they are bombarded for 21
days in a row. This means that our brain does not accept ‘new’ data for
a change of habit unless it is repeated each day for 21 days (without missing a day).

Hope that helps.

Thanks DeBorah, I'll give it a read. Fascinating. I'm always much happier (much happier!) citing referenced information to my clients for obvious reasons. I'll grab a copy and give it a read.

It's important to me to make sure things are fully sourced. Part of that is 'cos I spent 24 years as a university researcher but also because of the farce of Prof M's work with the "7% of what you say..." stuff. People who should have known better didn't bother to read the research and created a pretty significant myth out of it as I'm sure you'll know.
