1. People want to make more money.
They may want to start their own business, get a higher paying job or invest in the stock market. This will make them feel successful.

2. People want to save money.
They may want to invest for the future or save for a big purchase. This will make them feel more secure.

3. People want to save time.
They may want to work less and spend time enjoying life's pleasures. This will make them feel more relaxed.

4. People want to look better.
They may want to lose weight, tone their body, or improve their facial features. This will make them feel more attractive.

5. People want to learn something new.
They may want to learn how to change their car oil or build a deck. This will make them feel more intelligent.

6. People want to live longer.
They may want to get in shape, eat better or gain extra energy. This will make them feel healthier.

7. People want to be comfortable.
They may want to relive aches and pains or want to sleep in a more comfortable bed. This will make them feel relieved.

8. People want to be loved.
They may not want to be lonely anymore or want to start dating again. This will make them feel wanted.

9. People want to be popular.
They may want to be a famous celebrity or be more popular in school. This will make them feel praised and admired.

10. People want to gain pleasure.
They may want satisfy their appetite or sexual desires. This will make them feel more fulfilled.

I'm not arguing with any of those - they're all solid - but from our perspective there seems to be an 11th
  • People want to have a fear/pain taken away
Essentially, I'm saying this because of what we do - we train people to make presentations and do public speaking. Perhaps not so much for our in-house courses (where they seem to be booked more on the ten positive reasons listed above) but very much on our public courses the main reason for coming along is that the people recognise they have to speak in public and are simply terrified!

To Simonraybould: Pain elimination is definitely a good one. To elaborate on this accroding to my own experience, some pains could be psychological. For instance, the fear of losing a job.

For the 10 items on the list, I personally found the first three items (make more money, save more money, and save more time) the best. These benefits are very tangible. If we could do the math and demonstrate exactly how much money could be made or saved, that's even better.

These are right on, including the 11th trigger. These all relate to the emotional reasons people buy, or in sales terms, 'benefits'. Successful sales people know that you have to give the benefits, but you also need to give the features. These appeal to the logic and though we buy for mostly emotional reasons, we need to justify our purchase with logical reasons. Go after both and you should see results.

It's nice to be appreciated - but can I just sound a word of warning about my own 11th trigger?

I get very (very!) annoyed at sales people who try to induce fear in the first place... particularly if it's something of a false fear. I don't quite want to burn these people at the stake (unlike the person who hacked my blog this week) but it's very close indeed....
