In searching for a domain name - If the com, net & org are all taken can you use the name with a dash? Example: weight-Loss-Today.com.
Or if they are all taken can you use a word after the domain like: WeightLossToday101.com Thanks |

You can use the dashes if you choose to but just be warned it wilol not be easy to remember for your visitors. Also using numbers is a bad idea if you ever want to mention the domain name in a live chat, radio, on the phone, and etc...
101 could mean oneoone and as such "speaking" the domain name would not be a good thing... If you care nothing about speaking the domain name or care about it being easy to remember then you can use dashes and numbers. To me, I would just find another domain name. You do NOT always have to get keyword domain names. You are aware that even a keyword domain name can be outranked, right ?? James

Hey there KCman,
If you have trouble getting the creative domain name juices flowing (We all do that), you can always try a Domain Name Spinner like NameSpinster.com or any number of spinners available on line. Just Google Domain Name Spinner and you'll get lots of ideas. Using your example: YourWeightLossToday.com running it through a spinner you can find some pretty interesting take offs on your domain term, ie:
That's where the last three came from and as of this post time they were all available. I agree with James, if you can stay away from hyphens by being creative, you'll do better. It has been rumored that .org's will give you a little more juice with Google too. Hope this helps,

Hi. Just want some clarification on top level domains. If the .com is taken, which is better, a .org versus .net?

Domain extension does not matter .... Both can rank just as good. The .org is seen by most consumers as a non-profit though. Many marketers will disagree with that but the truth is the truth...
If .com is taken then try for a similar .com - There are always options... James

Hi. I have a top-level domain question. If the .com is taken but the .net and .org are available, which is better?

I think it depends on what you're trying to do. If you have an organization, .org is much better. If the .com is taken, I would look for another .com domain before going with a .net ... especially if someone already has the .com address ... but there are exceptions to this rule too.
If you think that 99-100 percent of your visitors are going to come to you via links, then the .net isn't such a bad idea. If you're hoping to generate leads via word of mouth or print, I would go with a different .com address. It's far too easy for someone to see a .net address on an ad and go to the .com site.

Thank you, Bob, for taking the time to respond to my question. I want to respond to you in a fresh thread because it relates to a question I have about the best way to promote a rental condo I have in Scottsdale Arizona. I know you have a rental villa in Maui and would love to hear what you and others have to say on this. Where is the best place for me to ask this question? Is this an okay thread to attach it to or should I start another one in a different forum?
