Where Do Podcasters Find Guests For Their Show?
Over the past few years I've had an opportunity to interview hundreds of guests on a variety of Internet radio shows including "The Recognized Expert Marketing Show." I can tell you from experience that every Internet radio and podcast host has the same concerns when it comes to inviting a guest on their show. They include:
I can only speak for myself, but I'm confident that every producer and host finds guests in the same way.
Borders Book Store
I love to read marketing and sales books and I can find the experts who wrote them at Borders Book Store. I can also find them at Walden Books and other brick and mortar stores. I look for potential guests at the book store because the perception of billions of people including myself is that anyone who has authored a book must be an expert on the subject.
So the first thing you can do to get the attention of a podcaster is to write a book and have it on the shelves at one of the major book stores.
Internet
This is the quickest way to find a guest. I can Google any term and find an expert on the subject in just a few minutes. My favorite place to find experts is on Amazon.com. Again, if you want the attention of a podcaster ... write a book an get it on Amazon.com.
Referrals
My best guests usually come from referrals. I ask each guest after the show if he or she can recommend another marketing expert for a future show. Nothing beats a strong recommendation.
If you know someone who has been a guest on a podcast or an Internet radio show, ask them to refer you to the show host or producer. This will go a long way toward helping you get a guest appearance.
Contact The Host Directly
A good 15% of my guests contacted me directly and sold me on having them as a guest on my show. But for every guest I invite, I turn down 10 others.
So, what can you do to get an invitation to be a guest on a podcast? Here's what I recommend.

So, what can you do to get an invitation to be a guest on a podcast? Here's what I recommend.
- Nothing will get the attention of a show host like a sincere compliment, but you can't offer a compliment unless you've listened to the show first.
- Tell the host your show idea and why it's a perfect match for their audience. Again, you can't do this unless you know what the show is about.
- Tell the host why you're an expert on the subject and back it up with proof. Offer to send them your book or a link to your website or send them a copy of your product or service to use.
- Tell the host how you plan to promote the show to your fans and customers. Offer to place a link to your show on your website.
- Make absolutely sure that your conversation is upbeat. If a producer or host feels that you're boring, they won't invite you on the show. They can't take that risk with their listeners.
- And finally, don't contact a show host unless your subject matter is 100% on target for their audience. If it's not 100% on target, either try to find a way to make it so or look for a different podcast.
