I've given well over 1,000 paid speeches in my life, and you would think after all of that time I would be much more comfortable standing-up in front of an audience ... and I am. Yes, it's true that a lot of my confidence comes from giving a thousand presentations, but most of is due to my speech preparation. Let me explain.

In the early days I tried all the tricks to eliminate the butterflies. They included seeing the audience nude, taking a sip of water, drinking a few beers, focusing on the friendliest person in the room and hundreds of other tactics. None of these things worked, although I enjoyed the beer.

What I did discover however, was that when I stopped speaking and allowed the audience to ask questions ... I was a different person. I was comfortable, funny and confident. I felt a little smarter and a lot better looking A transformation took place and I became the confident speaker I had envisioned in my dreams. But why?

The reason I became comfortable and confident was obvious. Once the floor was open to questions, the pressure was off me to perform. All I had to do was field the questions that I was very qualified to answer.

But how did that knowledge help me become a more confident public speaker? Look for part 2 of my blog and I'll show you three specific ways to use the power of questions and answers to overcome your fear of public speaking forever.
